A fascinating collection of essays originally published by the author in London Society magazine during the 1860s. Many facets of the game are covered including the origins of Lord's and the other early London cricket clubs; foundation of I Zingari; single-wicket matches; the foundation of Surrey CCC; cricket legislation and Thomas Barker's commentary of the Laws; the two "All-England" elevens and their matches; the 1863 Eton v Harrow match; Oxford v Cambridge in 1863; and "Notes on Modern Cricket". The author is not named on the title-page but instead the book is described as being written "by the author of The Cricket Field".

First edition. 12mo. vi + 238pp. Engraved frontispiece (E. Grace), 4 other engraved plates (W. Lillywhite, T. Lockyer, H.H. Stephenson & W. Caffyn, Hayward & Carpenter). Cloth boards are heavily rubbed and leather to spine has chipped away at ends. Two previous owner's names inside. Some rough page edges. Contents are still very good but the outside is fairly battered. Good for reference or rebinding.
