ALFRED DOWNER CARTE DE VISITE - SCOTTISH "CHAMPION SPRINTER OF THE WORLD"

Original Carte de Visite photograph of Alfred Reynolds Downer in running pose. Downer was born in Jamaica of Scottish parents and returned to Scotland as a child. He was an enormously successful sprinter as both an amateur and professional, but sadly drifted into obscurity later in life and died in an asylum aged 39. For many he was hailed as the "Champion Sprinter of the World".
