Ted Pooley (1842-1907) played cricket for Surrey and Middlesex between 1861 and 1883, mainly as a wicket-keeper. He would have been England's stumper in the first Test match of 1877 but for a fracas following a dodgy bet he took in Christchurch, New Zealand, prior to the team departing for that historic match in Melbourne.
