A biographical sketch of Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair, written soon after his death in 1861. It covers briefly his time in the army, serving mainly in India, before focusing on his time as Provost of St Andrews from 1842 onwards. Playfair is credited with instigating many improvements to the town of St Andrews but is perhaps best remembered for his role in reviving The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and, in particular, regenerating the Links. Two pages of the book cover this.
First edition. 8vo. 64pp. Photographic frontispiece of Playfair. Original green cloth boards with gilt title to front. The boards are lightly rubbed and bumped. Internally very good. This copy seems to have belonged to A.K. Lindesay of Balmungo, who was certainly an acquaintance of Playfair and is mentioned in the book. The word "Balmungo" is written in ink in contemporary hand to the top of the first page. A very good copy of an exceedingly rare book.
